The rapporteur for Macedonia in the European Parliament, Thomas Waitz, said that North Macedonia still needs to adopt constitutional changes in order to finally start negotiations.
He added in a statement to “360 Degrees” that the country’s negotiations were difficult and long, but that there is now a clear majority that speaks for itself, as the report was approved today in the Foreign Affairs Committee.
“I think it shows a clear will and support from the European Parliament for the accession process, but it is a merit-based process, so reforms are needed, constitutional changes are needed, which may not be the last. All our countries made constitutional changes in order to be able to join the EU, the common market, the common European law.”
“This is a very normal process and yes, North Macedonia needs to take the next steps, make constitutional changes so that we can finally start real negotiations,” Waitz said.
The report was approved this morning with 40 votes “in favor”, 19 against and 10 abstentions. /Telegraph/
