With their designated hitters ranking among the least productive in baseball this season, the Texas Rangers appear to be exploring external solutions.

The Rangers’ DH group has combined to hit .167/.249/.277, offering minimal offensive impact in a lineup that’s struggled to regain it’s 2023 World Series-winning form.
Joc Pederson, signed in the offseason to fill that role, got off to a slow start and was sidelined in late May with a broken hand. Since then, Texas has shuffled through internal options as results continue to be sparse.
That context makes it a surprise that the Rangers have reportedly made an offer to free agent J.D. Martinez.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Texas has reached out to the 37-year-old, who remains unsigned deep into the season but has been staying ready by working out in Miami.

Martinez played for the Mets last year, slashing .235/.320/.406 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs in 120 games. Though no longer the All-Star force of his days, the six-time All-Star still offers right-hander power and postseason experience, two qualities the Rangers could use as they try to stay afloat in the American League West.
