VILAS COUNTY, Wis. (WSAW) – The Vilas County Health Department has issued a health advisory for Big Arbor Vitae Lake Beach due to the presence of blue-green algae blooms.
Some species of blue-green algae can produce toxins that may cause illness in both humans and animals. Vilas County Health Department staff are working with the Wisconsin DNR to assess water conditions and post health advisory signage at the beach and other relevant public access points.
Blue-green algae is smelly and looks like spilled paint or pea soup. Some blooms form a thick layer of scum on the surface of the water near the shore. It blooms when wind, warm weather, and heavy rains wash phosphorus material, like fertilizers, into the water.
If you or your pets experience symptoms that could be related to blue-green algae exposure, contact your healthcare provider or veterinarian.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services also asks people to report suspected illnesses at https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/water/bg-algae/index.htm or by phone at 608-266-1120.
