Looks like Nationwide have invested funds into some glazing accounts judging by the comments here.
Nobody earning the eye-watering amounts that banking bosses earn need a 43% pay-rise. This is obscene.
£7m annual wage, in the current economy, is vile.
Will she be taking a 43% tax hike to go with her wage increase?
Lemmie guess. Nope.
I’m a Nationwide member and I’m not mad about this, it’s effectively a representative democracy (the members elect the board, the board decide day to day policy) and that’s fine. There has never been a vote on exec pay before.
I’m not sure the rise itself is justified but that’s a different question.
Nationwide doesn’t and shouldn’t need to compete with other banks’salaries because they are not a bank. If Debbie is upset her banking mates are getting paid more than her, then she should leave, rather than taking money from her staff and members. Whilst members may have never had a voice over exec pay in the past, it doesn’t mean they can’t be annoyed about it now or demand it in the future. It’s absolutely tone deaf by Debbie and I hope it leads to her exit.
I’m gonna ask my boss for a 43% pay rise and see what she says
Fingers crossed for me guys…….
For a company who’s adverts feature Dominic West as a stereotypical fat cat rival bank boss, this seems a bit off.
They didn’t allow their members to vote about their merger (buy out) of Virgin money which was a bit bad of them. Did get some money recently though from them..
Does this mean I’ll stop getting nobby YouTube adverts about how morally superior their senior level payment structure is?
Actually, I’ll keep them over the Revolut ones with that guy in a restaurant who’s supposed to be famous and I don’t know who he is.
I hate this “Market Rate” argument people make so much. CEO wages have risen dramatically and disproportionately from their employees for 50 years. This isn’t some unstoppable free market quirk that can’t be helped it’s a very deliberate funneling of wealth upwards at the expense of everyone else.
I’ve been happy with nationwide for years ago.
Sometimes you gotta shell out for top talent
A problem we see in our government, we pay like shit and we attract the average at best.
I’d just like a yearly pay rise of the inflation % guaranteed.
Let alone inflation plus like 40%
lol their TV adverts literally say we don’t do this kinda thing.
This isn’t a surprise considering the shenanigans shes played over the last couple years with the whole Clydesdale/Virgin/Nationwide consolidation
It’s not great, but I still prefer it over shareholders siphoning off all the money.
Oh look the institution still making the rich richer.
Honestly at this stage we should all be realising that this system doesn’t work for the back bone of Britain.
Plutocracy is where we are headed.
We’re screwed because they own the lawmakers.
Incompetent morons failing upwards. What else is new?
But that’s not what their Dominic West adverts portrayed?!
Would be nice to have a vote as a member of Nationwide but hey Nationwide has always been a pretty decent bank so who honestly cares if the CEO is getting paid well.
The only time I get pissed off is when a company is doing terribly and they decide to give the CEO and the board a pay rise.
Funny that she thinks she should get the salary of someone at one of the “big banks”, but get to keep the voting rules of the small banks
i swear they’re always telling me i own nationwide. why wasn’t i asked?!
I remember my friends worked at Nationwide and loved it due to remote work. So many articles on intranet and internal emails how Natuonwide cares about work life balance. Then this woman started took over and fully remote work was over and 3 days on side work started

Is she amazing ? – yes
Do we as a society put more stock into money management than actual public service jobs that change lives and should matter more ? – yes
Is there a disconnect between industries and acceptable pay – yes
Is there an element of “what about-ism” here ? – also yes
End of the day if the people she works for thinks she’s worth it , that’s what she’s gonna get .
Aim the argument at the broken societal politics we are trapped in , not at the people making the most of their lives
Looks like we should be getting a new advert coming with the Dominic West taking over Nationwide
