Three fragments of the Henry County / McDonough meteorite that fell on 6/26 in Central Georgia. I went and hunted this meteorite myself, recovering some fragments (some directly and some acquired from other hunters while there). The official classification is currently being conducted, but I suspect it is an L5 Chondrite.
Local newscast describing the fall, with an interview from me: https://www.wsbtv.com/video/local-video/meteorite-hunters-searching-fragments-henry-county/917b2279-fcb4-46e2-a789-8b29d61d63e4/

Does ‘Pending Classification’ mean that they haven’t established which kind of meteroite this **meteor** (or meteor-fragments) consists of.
So how do you guys do this? Is it pretty close to what we’d expect? You try to get a probable location of the track and then begin looking in the area where it was most likely to impact?
And then is it just a matter of looking around for black or iron-looking rocks? Do you use metal detecting equipment? Seems like a fun hobby, but not one that you’d get the chance to do much.
“What’s your county famous for?”
“Ah, well, we got hit by a rock from spaaaaaace!”
