Ecology North has launched a new website aimed at keeping NWT residents up to date and engaged with environmental legislation, regulations and policy.
Responsible Environmental Management NWT details political history and Indigenous rights in the NWT, environmental laws that are currently in place, and opportunities for the public to provide input on legislation and regulations under review.
“I think it’s helpful to understand how the environment is managed in the Northwest Territories because I think we kind-of hear lots of jargon and it’s really easy to be like, ‘Oh it’s complicated in the Northwest Territories,’ without taking the time to step back and have a look through what that actually means, because it’s kind-of a lot to navigate. It’s kind-of hard to figure out whose job it is to make sure our environment is protected and managed well,” Dawn Tremblay, executive director of Ecology North, told Cabin Radio.
“I think, actually, we all have a role to make sure that our environment is managed well … We all have a role because we can all hold our governments accountable and this helps us know who has jurisdiction where and when, and where the opportunities are to provide comments and get involved.”
Kevin O’Reilly walks people through the Responsible Environmental Management website.
The site notes, for example, that the NWT government is currently developing regulations for the Mineral Rights Act and reviewing the Heritage Fund Act while the federal government is developing regulations for the recently amended Fisheries Act.
Tremblay said the website is a public tool that is open to everyone and encouraged people to check it out.
Ecology North is a Yellowknife-based environmental non-profit organization that formed in 1971. It said it undertook the website project in collaboration with other non-profit organizations.
