AKRON, Ala. (WBRC) – A small community in Hale County kicked off a challenge in hopes of encouraging more people to become more health conscious.
The people who organized the effort want people in the Akron community to become a “Blood Pressure Champion.”
“Our goal is to help people understand what a normal level looks like for them, and use regular levels as a benchmark just to show them if their blood pressure is elevated or not,” explained Jovita Lewis, the Hale County Extension Director.
The Hale County Alabama Extension Office organized a three-day campaign asking people living in Akron to know and do more about their blood pressure.
They’re encouraged to visit the wellness station at the Akron Town Library where visitors can walk into the OnMed telehealth booth and check their blood pressure.
To be a Blood Pressure Champion, participants are asked to do that for three straight days.
“Well, I’m old. I’m a senior citizen and just suffer from high blood pressure and I just want to make sure I’m not to the stroke stage,” Arthurine Palmer told WBRC.
Participants who complete the three-day challenge will get a certificate of recognition and their name goes on a Blood Pressure Champion Wall of Fame.
