Ultra athlete in downpour

Heavy rainfall is expected for Vernon ultra athlete Shanda Hill as she keeps knocking off laps during the Poland Ultra Triathlon.

It’s Hill’s fourth deca triathlon of the year, which is the equivalent of 10 iron-distance races consisting of a 38-kilometre swim, 1,800-kilometre bike ride and 422-kilometre run.

Hill is currently tackling the biking portion of the race and has completed about 573 kilometres of the cycling portion. According to the Shanda Hill Ultra Athlete Facebook page, conditions in Poland have been overcast but heavy rain and lightning storms are expected for the next few days.

“That means slick roads, cold riders and an even higher chance of injuries, so it’s going to be a serious test for every athlete out there,” reads a Facebook post.

Despite the upcoming weather and already being caught in a downpour, Hill is in high spirits.

Hill is currently in first place out of all competitors. She has a 21 lap lead over her closest competitor, Goulwenn Tristant of France.

Hill’s mindset has changed when it comes to being in the lead.

“Shanda used to say she hated being chased, that it rattled her. Now she thrives on it, driving the pack from the front and pushing everyone to keep up. It’s exactly where she loves to be,” reads the post.
