JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) – The Consumers Energy Foundation named the Michigan AFL-CIO Workforce Development Institute (WDI) as one of its 2025 People Award winners.

The foundation awarded them $150,000 to support a new workforce cohort in the Jackson area through its Access for All program.

The Michigan AFL-CIO WDI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping unemployed and underemployed individuals access the training and resources needed to secure meaningful employment.

With this grant, WDI will work to remove common barriers to participation by offering support such as transportation, childcare assistance, stipends, work clothing, and protective equipment.

These services aim to ensure that participants can fully engage in training programs without having to sacrifice basic needs.

“This grant will allow us to ensure that participants falling below the ALICE threshold have access to the basic needs essential to complete skilled trades workforce development programs. We are grateful to the Consumers Energy Foundation for their investment in our mission,” said Colleen Sullivan, Michigan AFL-CIO’s deputy director.
