Kimberly Guilfoyle receives nod as US ambassador to Greece

    Kimberly Guilfoyle, nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as US ambassador to Greece, was approved by the full US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, Kathimerini understands. 

    Guilfoyle, a former prosecutor, Fox News TV host, testified during a confirmation hearing before the Committee on July 9. She appeared well prepared, giving clear, direct answers regarding Greek-American relations, Turkey and trilateral cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Israel.

    Among her most significant points were the Greece-Israel-Cyprus relationship and a reference to Piraeus port as strategic infrastructure purchased by China. She praised Greece’s recent legislative initiative creating a national mechanism for controlling foreign direct investment for security and public order reasons, comparing it to the American CFIUS mechanism, and referenced Greece’s multi-year defense investment exceeding 3% of GDP and described the country as a regional pillar of stability.

    She also discussed American military equipment Greece has purchased or will acquire, including F-35s, Black Hawk and Apache helicopters, and planned cooperation in Constellation-class frigate construction.

    Regarding Greek-Turkish relations, Guilfoyle called it a significant issue but said Trump is the best negotiator for finding peaceful solutions.
