The Republic of North Macedonia announced on Monday, in the capital of Skopje, its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan proposed in 2007, describing it as the “only serious and credible basis” for reaching a political solution to the Sahara dispute, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
This came in a joint declaration signed by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and his counterpart Timčo Mucunski, North Macedonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, after their meeting in the Macedonian capital.
Mucunski “reaffirmed his country’s longstanding support for the United Nations-led process to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution,” the declaration reads.
Bourita and Mucunski reaffirmed their shared commitment to the UN’s role in the diplomatic process, expressing support for Security Council Resolution 2756, adopted in October 2024. The resolution underscores “the role and responsibility of the parties in pursuing a realistic, lasting, and compromise-based solution.”
The declaration also affirms the full support of both Morocco and the Republic of North Macedonia for the mission of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, which is being carried out “in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.”
