  1. Fine if they also ban ads for people being unhealthily fat, but for some reason that is promoted as ‘body positive’?

  2. Adventurous-Big8826 on

And yet you could have a morbidly obese model and it would be celebrated.

If there’s a healthy look then it needs to go both ways.

Anyone over 100kg should be banned for modelling as well then, unless they have a body-fat ratio less than 17%

  4. I would actually like to see my body type represented. Just an average weight, not under and not over. That would be nice for a change. And someone short, for the love of God.

  5. InsideOutCosmonaut on

I’ve seen a lot of unhealthily fat models in ads, definite double standard here.

  6. Wow I didnt know they started doing that. There have been models who worked right up to their death from anorexia.

    Obese female model is empowering

Obese male model fat and gross

    Skinny models unhealthy.

  8. 1) Thin people exist, and;

    2) They have absolutely no basis whatsoever to have made the judgement that she is ‘unhealthy’ or that any such health issues in fact relate to her size/weight.

I actually don’t think this model looks unhealthily thin at all. There’s plenty of very thin & unhealthy models out there but this one it seems her natural frame?

  10. The article says it is more about the pose making her look even thinner than she is. Which was considered irresponsible. It also says Next faced a similar censure for a similar issue.

  11. It’s a weird camera angle but IDK how you can say it’s promoting the thinness of her legs when she’s wearing slacks lol.

  12. Double_Baseball_2392 on

The model in the ad doesn’t look ‘unhealthily thin’ to me, she’s slim yeah but I wouldn’t say she looks ‘unhealthy’.

  13. This is amazingly disgusting body shaming.

“The ASA also said the model’s head appeared out of proportion with the rest of her body which further highlighted her small frame.”

This is a piggish comment about a persons physical appearance. It appears the Advertising Standards Authority is not fit for purpose.

Oh, so a morbidly obese person is body positivity, but a thin skinny person is unhealthy?

    Fucking double standards.

  15. No_Cauliflower_81 on

Really curious to see what the people who made the decision look like lmao

She does look pretty skinny but unless she actually has an eating disorder or is clinically underweight what is the problem?

Cant have it both ways, if you are going to ban people who are skinny then ban the fat ones too.
There are plenty of adverts where they are spinning around ice skating and that – ban

We can then have just average people, fine by me

  17. I get why companies shouldn’t be promoting unhealthy body types. But to me, she doesn’t look too thin. As someone of this build, who struggles to gain weight (but is still a healthy BMI according to the NHS), it actually feels pretty shit to have my body type deemed unhealthy.

  18. Good. With the return of the super thin trend (and the thinspo rampant on places like tiktok) it’s good to see at least lip service to the idea that we should challenge the kind of images that we know cause eating disorders.

People (especially Men) will rush to shame bigger people as proven on this Thread but are quick to thirst over or get in the Dm’s of bigger women, it’s not uncommon for people to get with bigger women and either shame them for it or keep them secret.. it’s weird.

I bet plenty of the people who are fatshaming in this thread fit one of these categories or has done at least once in their life.

  20. So isn’t that discrimination in itself? Like people who have no problem saying “omg you’re soo skinny, you’ll blow away” but it’s not ok to say “omg you’re so fat, hide the cakes”. Hypocrites.

Thinspration isn’t something M&S want to be doing. Surprising no one picked this up there.

  22. Wish we could place bets on whether the unhealthy model will outlive the people calling to ban this.

  23. I doubt it will get anyway but I have written to the ASA about this and the recent Next case. Just the language used is inherently judgemental and stigmatising, imagine how the model must feel? This is her livelihood and her work has been erased, and we can be sure M&S won’t be hiring her again.

The idea that certain body types should be censored from the media is harmful in of itself, but surely thin people should not be the target of this policy when obesity is a far bigger issue.

  24. As a really skinny person, shit like this is infuriating. So many fatties seem to think anyone who has a bmi below 20 is on death’s door lol

Why do people care so much about what other people look like?

Dress it up as “concerned for peoples health” that’s Bull shit. Most people couldn’t give a toss about a strangers health.

We all die, stop being mean to people because of what they look like.

this is just how people look in east africa lol. they are very slim and very tall
