VEGA, Texas (KFDA) – Ruben makes his way to Vega and learns how Route 66 plays a big part in the town’s economy.

Tourists can still embrace the history and nostaglia of Route 66. It still showcases glimpses of earlier times.

Brittney Janssen, director of the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce, says the Magnolia Station across the street was the second gas station built on Route 66.

It was completely restored by the Chamber of Commerce and city of Vega.

“It is just overall, again just very heartwarming — especially because we get to show them a little bit of our southern hospitality while teaching them the history of Route 66 and our little communities along Route 66,” said Janssen.

Janssen says the Milburn Price Museum is one of the best attractions around Vega.

“Greg over at the museum has done a fabulous job of bringing items in history, things like that. He is also big in the Route 66. He actually sells the Route 66 coin albums,” said Janssen.

The town is anticipating the Centennial next year.

There is a group of volunteers that meet Monday through Thursday at the Magnolia Station.

“I think every day, when I talked to them, I learned something new about that Magnolia Station, and you can’t ever go wrong with a pie over at Mama Joe’s,” said Janssen.

The midpoint over in Adrian is 1,139 miles to Chicago and 1,139 miles to Los Angeles.

“The Dream Maker Station is a Route 66 souvenir and gift shop as well as can’t miss an opportunity for the sign at the midpoint,” said Janssen.

She says the murals are a great attraction to the town and show their pride, history, and a bit of the western aspect. They were painted by a local artist.

“It is definitely a good attraction, a good sightseeing thing for our small little community as well,” said Janssen.
