The Supreme Court in Belgrade has ordered a one-month pre-trial detention for Kosovo citizen Lulzim Halili, who was arrested in Serbia on July 22, on suspicion of “war crimes.”

Serbia claims that he was a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), but such a claim has been rejected by the KLA Veterans Organization, REL reports, following KosovaPress.

“On July 24, 2025, the War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade issued an order to initiate investigations against LH, due to suspicions of committing the criminal offense of organizing and inciting the commission of genocide and war crimes,” the War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade said.

The Kosovo Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora (MFAD) said on July 23 that it had informed the delegation of the European Union and QUINT countries in Serbia about the case. The MFA said it had not been officially informed by Serbia about Halil’s arrest.

“Once it is confirmed whether Halili will be subject to pre-trial detention and criminal proceedings will be initiated against him, the Liaison Office will submit an official request for a visit to the Detention Center,” the MFA said on July 23.

The KLA’s OVL previously told Radio Free Europe that Lulzim Halili’s name was not found in the archives of war veterans nor in the lists of several KLA brigades.

Serbia has arrested several Kosovo citizens for alleged war crimes in recent years.
