Seven years without Adam Demaçin

Today marks seven years since the death of national activist Adem Demaçi, known as the Mandela of Kosovo.

Coming from the village of Lupq i Podujeva, Demaçi was born on February 26, 1936 in Pristina. Adam Demaçi was active for the national cause during Yugoslavia and fought for Kosovo’s equality with other republics.

For his political commitment, Adem Demaçi He served 28 years in prison in Yugoslavia. After his release, he immediately resumed his political activities. He was also called the Nelson Mandela of Europe.

Adam Demaçi led the Council for Human Rights and Freedoms (KMDLNJ) from 1990 to 1995. In 1991 he was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament. During the period 1998-1999, when the meetings were held in Rambouillet on the future of Kosovo, he was the political spokesperson of the KLA. He was simultaneously the chairman of the League of Writers of Kosovo (2005-2007).

Today, the people of the national resistance are identified with the name of Adem Demaçit, because he, with his work and work, became a symbol of unification for the preservation of the Albanian nation, over five decades.

Adam Demaçi with his life and work, he became a personality of the proportions of the general human history, where our national history is also a part. He wrote the novel “Blood Snakes” which was banned by the former communist regime. He saw the light only after the nineties.

On the afternoon of July 26, 2018, Demaçi passed away. In his honor, many state activities were organized and three days of mourning were held in Kosovo.
