South African businessman Errol Musk, father of billionaire Elon Musk, visited Bosnia this week to assess its potential as a place to establish a research institute on gravity, space-time and longevity, months after announcing he would base it in Dubai.

According to Reuters, Musk, a 79-year-old engineer, was quoted by the Bosnian news portal Klix as saying that he had been offered a location in the United Arab Emirates, but that he had been advised by a friend of Balkan origin to explore the region.

“I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised by what I found. The economy, the availability of things, the behavior of the people. I spent a few days here and thought – this is perfect. My initial idea was that the Emirates were ideal, but now that I’ve seen this… I would say this is much better,” Errol Musk is quoted as saying.

The Bosnian-Croat Federation Chamber of Commerce reportedly presented Musk with the country’s economic potential and educated workforce during a presentation on Wednesday. He said he had not spoken to Bosnian government officials, as it was a private initiative to investigate “the four areas of longevity, fusion, space-time and gravity.”

Musk is said to have expressed concerns about overly controlling governments and said he wanted to attract people who were “not brainwashed and who believed that such things are not possible,” adding that he had also visited Austria and Serbia.

Errol Musk reportedly said he had not reviewed Bosnia’s political system and had not discussed the potential investment with his son, Elon Musk, but would try to convince him.
