“….lots of astronomers wondered how long it would be before Avi Loeb claimed it was an alien spacecraft…..”

Avi Loeb is 100% convinced that literally everything is aliens. No one else thinks his “incontrovertible proof” is proof at all, nevermind incontrovertible, but he’s sure.

I mean, I was willing to entertain his claims with Oumuamua because it was the first observation of it’s kind which made these kinds of speculations seem somewhat reasonable but now, it’s looking more like this is normal and we just developed instruments capable of observing this phenomenon/have started paying attention *or maybe* the solar system is moving into an interstellar debris field and we’re about to get pelted by 250km wide blocks of ice, maybe we’re about to get a cosmic demonstration of why life exists here, maybe Mars is about to get wet…. All seems more likely than AYY LMAOs. Either way, 3I/ATLAS is probably just a reaally, really old comet.

He’s not doing any favors for science at this particular juncture. The conservatives don’t need any more reason to doubt real science.

Some of the comments on Jason’s piece are nuts. Dismissing the whole post because of his note that he’s not a planetary scientist, while ignoring that, of course, neither is Avi Loeb. And Jason Wright is actually making an effort to engage with experts in the field.
Avi’s repeated discussion of smearing in exposures is bizarre and shows the problems with failing to engage with people in the field.
