For context, the Northwest Territories has a population of less than 50,000. They had a very bad year in 2023, there were six murders – in 2024 it was three.

  3. The HUGE gap between Hawaii (1.4) and the next lowest state, New Hampshire (1.9) is really interesting.

What the hell is up with Maine? No wonder Stephen King set so many books there.

  5. Fucking Louisiana at the top of the pack again for bad shit. Worst state by far – shitty roads, shitty schools, most corrupt governments (state and local), highest auto insurance rates, highest homicide rate, least healthy state, just an overall irredeemable piece of crap state.

The incredible food can’t make up for the rest of the absolute ass that the state is.

I live in Saskatchewan, one of the dark Orange areas in the middle of Canada.
Crime rate statistics here, never tell the whole story. Nearly all violent crime here is one indigenous person victimizing another indigenous person who is known to them.
“Random stranger violence” is extremely uncommon.

  7. Louisiana never fells to impress. Dont give up hillbillies, you are on the right path.

Take that down to postal code. In the US you’ll see maybe 20 zip codes, local neighborhoods, that dominate the rate for the state – and country. Outside of those zip codes, I’d wager the US is safer than most of the industrialized world.

  9. For reference most European countries are between 0.5 and 1.5 . There isn’t a single American state that falls within that range apparently .

Am I reading this right, that DC has a rate of 38 homicides per 1000? What’s causing such a small area to be 4-7x worse than its neighbors?
