The release of a new Adam Sandler film is prompting a movie marathon at Norman’s local bar and restaurant The Standard, along with a hockey stick putting contest.

“We’re having a Happy Gilmore Day,” said Tim Heitzman at The Standard, which stands at 315 E Gray St.

First, Heitzman said, they’ll show the original 1996 comedy at 3 p.m. Sunday.

“We’ll have golf-themed cocktails,” said Heitzman. The event will run all day Sunday.

While the first movie is on, he said there will be themed beverages and local craft beers while they get ready for the putting contest.

When the first movie ends, Heitzman said they will gather at 5 p.m. with hockey sticks, and there will be a winner, he said.

“Happy Gilmore 2” is a sequel to the 1996 original, just released on Friday. Heitzman said the sequel will play at 5:45 p.m.

The original “Happy Gilmore” movie follows Adam Sandler’s character on his comedic journey to becoming a hockey player. However, he is short on both skating skills and a temper. A series of fortunate, unfortunate, and strange events then lead him to discover his latent talent for golf instead and have a vision of Abraham Lincoln.

The new movie comes out 29 years after the original release. It will star Sandler reprising the role as Gilmore, along with Christopher McDonald who returns as Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen, who returns as Virginia Venit.

The new movie begins with an unexpected twist.

The Standard is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with Happy Hour from 3-6 p.m.

“We’d love to see people there,” Heitzman said.
