Some snippets from the news this month, arguable a "low traffic" season due to being summer:

And some statistics:

  1. We are the 10th highest country in vehicles per capita.
  2. The absolute majority of accidents in Malta are on what the EU classifies as "rural roads" – in spite of this there is a huge number of luxury sports cars which are too fast for such roads.
  3. At least half of the accident fatalities in Malta are pedestrians

Excluding a few exceptions, our roads are full of portholes, we lack any walking or cycling infrastructure, people continue to drive massive and fast cars which have no place on our streets.

The news is horrific and the feeling is horrible, what can Malta do to stop this?

I think living in Malta is lethal. Just seen a dumping shit in siggiewi is resulting in increasing asthma cases. You not even safe under your own roof.

  3. I have been driving all around the world for more than 40 years now… and I was actually surprised how few accidents I have seen on Maltese roads. There is always room for improvement, but IMHO Malta by far not the worst place.

I think it is definitely time to consider a limit on the size of cars here, both in terms of length and engine power.

We also need clearer rules on what people can or cannot do on motorcycles.  I’m not saying that many car drivers aren’t dicks to motorcyclists, but the inverse is also very very true.  Looking at your list, of the 6 motorcycle accidents, 4 didn’t even involve a car.

  5. Mate, less than an hour ago, i entered a roundabout a few seconds after motorcyclist on the entry/exit of my left, right after he exited on the same road as mine, ie. He drove the roundabout the wrong way just to avoid going the full circle…

I wish I had the dash cam mounted…

Especially bikers drive very fast. I live close to Gozo pier and the bikers are driving on that road towards victoria 100KMH easy. As a motorbiker myself, this is extremely excessive and dangerous speed.

What can Malta stop to this? Instill safety culture, through fear if necessary.

Racing, excessive speeding and reckless driving – 1st time large fine and lose license for 6 months, 2nd time confiscate the vehicle permanently. Yes, I mean permanently, doesn’t matter how expensive it is.

Any deaths because of speeding, reckless driving, texting –> involuntary manslaughter, prison sentence.

Drunk driving –> install alcohol detection lock in car for 3 years and forced courses/therapy for alcohol abuse. Second time prison.

Driving under drugs –> 6 months licence suspension, mandatory bi-weekly drug testing for 1 year which needs to be passed.

Install speeding cameras on all the known hotspots, increase fines.

Install speeding bumps in strategic places, make them in way that they will fuck the car up proper if you’re speeding.

Not paying fines without proof of lack of income –> community service for certain hours to cover the fines.

Finally, more funding to traffic police and do surprise stops. Known hotspots for drunk driving, set a checkpoint and make every driver do alcohol and drug test. Repeat this every single weekend, change places.

Just day dreaming. None of this will happen because no one gives a shit, not until someone important or their relative gets smashed.

  7. Time and time again the law is suggesting that if you want to kill someone and get away with it just use a car hux

This morning on my way to work I encountered

A bus suddenly pulling out of the bust stop and into my lane, pretty much turned on his indicator and pulled out without looking

A truck forcing it’s way into my car/lane with no indicator (FWIW)

Some dude in an SUV going over a stop sign, right in front of me and then plodding along at 40km/h in a main road

Some old dude exiting a two way street that I needed to enter. He was on the wrong side. He then started waving his hand at me to go around him.

On my way home I had a bolt driver speed up to try and stop me from merging. The guy I was merging behind came to a sudden stop so I had to stop and the bolt dude had to slam on his brakes to not hit me. He then started honking his horn and gesturing

Not to mention the typical smaller stuff that comes from driving on regional road.

I think the constant need for vigilance on the drive to and from work makes it among the most exhausting parts of my day.

Whan you play with fire you get burned.

I have seen people so lazy that they cross the road and the lights are 5 meters away.

We can thank Chris bonett for the quality of the roads and enforcement even though I pay 375 eur per year on road license alone it seems it goes directly to his pocket
