    US-EU Trade Deal: Impact on German Economy and Export Concerns – News and Statistics

    The recent trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, described by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a stabilizing measure, has sparked mixed reactions from the German economy. Representatives of the German industry have expressed concerns over the potential economic impact. According to IndexBox data, the EU’s car exports to the US, now facing a 15% tariff, could affect the 2023 export value, which was estimated at over €50 billion.

    While von der Leyen highlighted the agreement as a means to prevent a tariff war, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s Managing Director Helena Melnikov noted that the deal, though averting a worse scenario, comes at a cost to the European economy. Wolfgang Niedermark of the Federation of German Industries warned that even a reduced tariff rate would significantly impact Germany’s export-driven sectors.

    The Federal Association of Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Service echoed these concerns, predicting shifts in supply chains and increased prices, which could hinder Germany’s economic growth and employment. Meanwhile, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing its role in preventing an escalation of trade tensions.

    Despite these assurances, skepticism remains regarding the reliability of the US administration’s commitments, as highlighted by Michael Huther of the Institute for the German Economy. The ongoing tariff threats continue to cast uncertainty over future trade relations.
