It was officially announced today that the country will host the 2027 edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG). The announcement came during a signing ceremony held in Malta, attended by President of Commonwealth Sport Dr Donald Rukare, Malta’s Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima, and President of Commonwealth Sport Malta Julian Pace Bonello.
The 8th edition of the Games will be held across Malta and Gozo, bringing together approximately 1,150 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 74 Commonwealth countries and territories. The event will feature eight sporting disciplines: Swimming and Para-Swimming, Athletics and Para-Athletics, Netball, Squash, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and, for the first time in CYG history, Sailing and Water Polo.
Beyond the sporting competitions, the Games will also include a dynamic cultural and educational programme, with a strong focus on sustainability, youth empowerment, and Malta’s rich cultural heritage. The international event is expected to place Malta in the global sporting spotlight and boost the tourism sector significantly.
Minister Grima reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sport as a tool for development. “Malta 2027 is a testament to our growing ambition and capacity in the world of sport. Hosting the Commonwealth Youth Games is not just an honour, it is an investment in our youth, our communities, and our international standing. These Games will inspire a generation, showcase Maltese talent and hospitality, and leave a legacy that extends beyond sport,” he said. The Minister also highlighted that this announcement comes at a time when Maltese sport and international participation are achieving unprecedented success.
Rukare expressed his enthusiasm: “We are excited to bring the Commonwealth Youth Games to Malta in 2027 and thank both Commonwealth Sport Malta and the Government of Malta for their commitment and vision. The athlete-focused proposal, world-class facilities, and Malta’s experience in hosting international events make it an ideal host nation. The Games are more than a celebration of sport – they are a transformative experience for young athletes. These competitors are tomorrow’s stars and today’s voices – true changemakers shaping the future of our Movement.”
Pace Bonello, President of Commonwealth Sport Malta, described the Games as a unique opportunity for the country. “Malta 2027 will be a celebration of unity, youth, and excellence. This is a long-term vision that goes beyond a single event. It’s about building a legacy in sports participation, athlete development, and international recognition. Our young athletes will have the chance to compete on home soil and inspire a whole generation. We are honoured to have been entrusted with this prestigious event. Our thanks go to Commonwealth Sport for their trust, and to the Maltese Government for their strong support.”
The Commonwealth Youth Games have a proud history of launching the careers of international stars such as Kirani James (Athletics), Chad le Clos (Swimming), Jessica Ennis (Athletics), and Beth Tweddle (Artistic Gymnastics).
