In a landmark development for academic collaboration between Malta and the United States, the prestigious U.S. Fulbright Specialist Program will soon be introduced at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). The announcement came following the signing of a bilateral agreement between the US Embassy in Malta and MCAST, a government statement said Friday.

The agreement, described by the government as a milestone in US-Malta academic exchange, affirms a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and academic leadership. According to Malta’s Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation, the program will strengthen bilateral cooperation while offering unique educational opportunities for Maltese students and educators.

“This collaboration is a testament to the strong partnership between Malta and the United States,” said Education Minister Clifton Grima during the signing ceremony. “It will provide MCAST students and faculty with unique opportunities to engage with leading American experts and contribute to global academic development.”

The signing ceremony was presided over by Minister Grima and MCAST Board of Governors President Horace Laudi. The agreement was signed by US ChargĂ© d’Affaires Ken Toko and MCAST Principal and CEO Stephen Vella.

Part of the wider Fulbright initiative, the Specialist Program connects U.S.-based academics and professionals with institutions abroad for short-term collaborative projects aimed at advancing knowledge and long-term partnerships. The program’s expansion to MCAST reflects both nations’ dedication to academic excellence and international cooperation.

Minister Grima welcomed MCAST’s inclusion in the Fulbright network, saying, “We are proud to see MCAST, a pillar of Malta’s educational framework, join the Fulbright network. This initiative will not only strengthen academic ties but broaden horizons-for both American specialists and the Maltese academic community.”

US ChargĂ© d’Affaires Ken Toko echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the program’s broader cultural and diplomatic impact. “Fulbright participants are more than just scholars-they are ambassadors of mutual understanding. Through their work, they build people-to-people connections that support and enhance our governments’ efforts. Fulbright students, both Maltese and American, play a vital role in deepening what is already an excellent bilateral relationship.”
