In June 2025, foreign tourism in Serbia declined slightly, with 217,606 foreign visitors coming into the country. This was a 0.8% drop from the corresponding month in 2024, based on data presented by the national statistical office. In addition to the decline in the number of tourists, overnight stays decreased by 2%, reaching 523,200 nights spent within the country.
In spite of the slight decrease, Serbia is still a favorite, welcoming a wide variety of foreign tourists. Serbia’s tourism industry continues to struggle, with both domestic and foreign visits registering minor declines.
Top Foreign Visitors to Serbia
Among the foreign visitors in June, Turkey emerged as the leading source of tourists, contributing 24,175 visitors, followed by China with 21,423 tourists. Russia and Bosnia and Herzegovina followed with 15,431 and 14,214 visitors, respectively. Germany rounded out the top five with 13,513 tourists.
These figures reflect Serbia’s broad appeal across different regions, particularly in Southeast Europe and Asia, with countries like Turkey, China, and Russia showing significant interest in visiting Serbia’s cultural and historical sites.
Year-to-Date Tourism Performance
In the first half of 2025, a total of 1,020,455 foreign visitors arrived in Serbia, marking a 0.5% decrease compared to the same period last year. However, the total overnight stays in the first six months increased by 1.1%, reaching 2,775,525 nights. This suggests that while the number of arrivals has decreased slightly, the length of stay per tourist has increased, indicating a shift towards more extended visits.
Domestic Tourism Declines
In June, domestic tourism also saw a decline. The number of domestic tourists fell by 1.4%, totaling 175,547 visitors, while their overnight stays decreased by 3.4%, amounting to 595,987 nights. The overall tourism sector in Serbia experienced a 1% decline in June, with 393,153 total visitors, who spent 1,119,187 overnight stays—a 2.8% decrease from the previous year.
These declines reflect broader challenges in the Serbian tourism industry, which could be impacted by various factors such as economic conditions, global travel trends, and competition from other regional destinations.
Strong Performance in 2024
Despite the minor downturn in 2025, Serbia’s tourism sector showed strong performance in 2024, with a 12% increase in foreign tourist arrivals, reaching a total of 2.385 million visitors. Overnight stays in 2024 also grew by 9.2%, totaling 6.098 million nights. This indicates that while there may be short-term fluctuations, Serbia remains a growing destination for international travelers.
Looking Ahead: Strategies for Growth
Serbia’s tourism officials are optimistic about the long-term future of the sector. Efforts to enhance infrastructure, expand marketing campaigns, and improve visa policies are expected to drive continued growth. In addition, Serbia’s unique cultural offerings and historical landmarks position it as a competitive travel destination in the region. Moving forward, Serbia is focused on adapting to new global travel trends, promoting the country as a hub for both international and domestic tourism.
Struggles Ahead for the Tourism Growth in Serbia
Serbia’s tourism statistics in June 2025 decreased somewhat, the overall tendency for the year is stable enough, with a minor decrease in foreign visitors but a slight growth in nights spent. Serbia still welcomes foreigners from various markets, especially from Turkey, China, and Russia, during challenging times for the tourism industry. In the future, Serbia’s tourist policy will have to concentrate on smoothing out these fluctuations, to continue to use its abounding cultural inheritance and natural landscapes to attract foreign tourists.
