Sweden plans to allocate 275 million dollars to purchase weapons from the United States to support Ukraine as part of a NATO-coordinated initiative (PURL). This was announced on August 5 during a press conference by Sweden’s Minister of Defense, Peter Hultqvist.

“This initiative is coordinated by NATO, and the Swedish contribution will be provided in the future to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. These weapons will be delivered to Ukraine next month.”

The minister emphasized that the situation in Ukraine is “very serious,” noting that recent Russian airstrikes have targeted civilian objects and infrastructure.

“This shows that Russia does not want to end the war against Ukraine. Russia also clearly demonstrates that it wants to seize the entire country. The number of Russian airstrikes highlights Kyiv’s need for additional military support, especially in the area of air defense.”

Earlier, Hultqvist stated that Sweden will actively join efforts to increase arms supplies to Ukraine through NATO, specifically referring to Patriot air defense systems.

On July 14, the United States and NATO signed an agreement providing for the delivery of American weapons to Ukraine funded by European countries. The Secretary General of the military-political bloc, Mark Rutte, announced that under this agreement, Kyiv could receive a significant number of air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition.

On August 4, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Denys Shmyhal, announced the launch of a new support mechanism for Ukraine through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. The main goal of this mechanism is to ensure the rapid delivery of American weapons to Ukrainian forces.

The Netherlands has already financed the first aid package under PURL worth 500 million euros.
