Reading the article I would assume that the plans are wanted incase they need to destroy them for any reason. It’s pretty normal to have contingency plans for stuff that can have serious consequences if not taken care right away. Could be wrong and they do want them destroyed, but I haven’t seen anything in the article implying that,just speculation.

There is also discussion around privatizing one or both (which would still be an issue, but one that is easier to correct down the road).

Did OP read the article they posted? They are quoting someone who does not work at NASA anymore, as they retired. The person they quoted was asked some questions & they inferred that NASA was ordered to destroy the satellites. But nobody at NASA nor at the WH have said they are destroying them. The article even states that NASA has confirmed OTHER projects have been or will be terminated, but not this one.

The Trump administration has requested that NASA develop plans to end these missions. If one mission were to end, the satellite would burn up in the atmosphere.
Key word PLANS this is not happening now it is in the future most likely when the satellite has exhausted ts fuel in a few years
