The European Democratic Party (EDP), one of the central political forces on the European Union’s political scene, has reacted sharply after an incident in Serbia that has raised widespread concern about the state of democracy and fundamental rights in that country.

In the Serbian town of Bački Petrovac, a one-day photo exhibition documenting months of citizen protests against the government of President Aleksandar Vučić has been violently attacked by individuals affiliated with the ruling party. According to EDP, what makes the situation even more alarming is the fact that Serbian police, instead of protecting the exhibition organizers and arresting the attackers, have protected the aggressors and allowed the act of violence to occur.

Further, when citizens from Novi Sad attempted to come to the aid and solidarity of the organizers after the attack, police blocked their entry into the city, impeding freedom of movement and assembly.

In an official statement shared on social media, the European Democratic Party called this a “direct attack on freedom of expression and the rule of law, carried out with the cooperation of Vučić’s police.”

“Europe must stand strongly alongside those who defend democracy, from Belgrade to Brussels,” the response concludes.

This reaction comes at a time when tensions in Serbia have increased regarding media freedom, civic protests, and the authoritarian actions of the government under the leadership of Aleksandar Vučić.
