Large protests begin across Serbia

New large protests have been announced for tonight on the streets of Serbia, in all major cities. Belgrade residents are gathering tonight in three locations – near the General Staff in Nemanjina, at the roundabout near GO Novi Beograd and at Autokomanda.
In GO Novi Beograd, citizens began to gather, and a larger group of people from Zemun also arrived, reports KosovaPress.
Supporters of Vučić’s party are already gathering in front of the party’s premises in the center of Vrbas, an hour before the protest called by the Vrbas Students’ Voice association.
There are no uniformed police in the city center. Five citizens from Vërbas who were protesting yesterday were arrested during the day.
The Belgrade Center for Human Rights has accused the police of only protecting members of Vucic’s party during recent protests in Serbia, while leaving anti-government protesters without protection.
They mention the peaceful protest in Vrbas on August 12, when SNS activists threw fireworks, bottles and bricks at the crowd, while the police remained passive.
Because of this, they have filed criminal charges against several unknown police officers, claiming that this was a criminal act.
The center states that the police also acted unilaterally during last night’s protests in several cities, and that the cruel treatment of citizens was recorded on video.
Riots erupted last night in Novi Sad and Belgrade, where citizens gathered after supporters of Aleksandar Vučić attacked protesters in Vrbas and Bačka Palanka.
The protests in Serbia began after the tragedy on November 1, 2024, when a tent collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station and claimed 16 lives. Almost a year later, such escalations also suggest that the regime has decided to use force against protesters more and more often.
