Time until Farage declares with no evidence that Muslims terrorist bombers will use this to get to Britain and only he can cancel the project in order to save us all … 3 … 2 … 1 …

If we can’t do a London to Manchester return for less than £380, I’m not sure I’m ready for the 30 year mortgage necessary for one of these tickets. How about we focus on getting the train lines we have working normally?

We can’t even run rail operations across a country! What fucking chance do we have across a continent?!

So much doomposting ITT. If they can pull it off then this is undoubtedly a good thing. So much more comfortable than flying (and better for the environment)!

Normally I would be exited about better travel connections with Europe but how has our county got the money for this. Surely there are better things to spend the money on.

They couldn’t complete HS2 properly but a rail link to Germany is suddenly possible.

I geniunely don’t get what people are mad about here.
The infrastructure i.e. the chunnel already exists, this will surely be primarily work outside the UK, creating new routes connecting to Brussels?

Good idea. I just wish we stayed in the EU. Maybe projects like this will help us get on good terms with the EU again.

Sensible idea, I wonder how deep into Germany this route would go though, would be awesome if you could get the Eurostar to Berlin but I doubt they would go that far!

The worlds most expensive rail network and the worlds least functional rail network joining forces.
What could go wrong?

This is cool. Hopefully it means some DB action down HS1, because seeing some DB ICEs thundering through kent at 186mph would be epic.

Anything beyond Frankfurt I’ll belive it when it see it, it’ll be about 10 times the duration of the plane to take the train to Berlin.

Of which I’m guessing the train won’t go any further into the country than London?

Cool, something for my great-grand kids to look forward to.

No way its gonna be cheaper than flying so makes it almsot pointless to use
Ahem! Don’t they mean a *London* to Germany rail link?

Think the UK should focus on getting high speed from London to Manchester before high speed between London and Berlin

All this needs is passport control at the German station and some space in the schedule at St Pancras and on the lines. I’m not sure how many people would use it when it’s almost certainly going to cheaper and quicker to fly though.

This has been in the “planning stage” for almost 30 years now, it won’t likely happen in any of our lifetimes.

I admire the absolute accuracy of the title, just in case anyone thought part of the plan would involve building a rail tunnel to NI!

The HS2 stuff is so interesting because if it actually achieved what the goal was which was creating a spine from the north of the country to the south and London would have been incredible
But the way it actually got done amidst austerity brexit and more and then the lack of environmental impact stuff and then cutting up farm land and no visible benefit for the regions it cut through made it a headache.
It’s been nerfed so much while costs ballooned it’s nothing
But if this Germany and UK rail link helps keep some links to Europe for work and trade for Atleast the youth that would be a good thing imo
Unless the money comes out of something critical at home

Those poor Germans. It’ll take us 20 years just to finish planning the damned thing and getting approval from local councils, not to mention the exponentially increasing budget as each year ticks by.
