The Missouri Gaming Commission has selected two companies to receive direct mobile licenses for sports wagering, meaning they’ll be able to host online sports betting for Missouri residents. Companies with the direct mobile license can operate independently and are not affiliated with casinos or sports districts. The gaming commission awarded DraftKings and Circa Sports the two direct mobile licenses. They were chosen over FanDuel, which was also a finalist in the application process. DraftKings and FanDuel are two of the most well-known sports betting companies in the country. The two companies are each other’s primary competitors. “We’re pleased to secure one of two direct mobile licenses in Missouri — paving the way for us to bring DraftKings’ industry-leading online sportsbook to fans across the state,” said Matt Kalish, president of DraftKings North America, in a news release. “Missouri is home to several professional teams and deeply passionate fanbases, and we look forward to enhancing their sports experience with a dynamic and responsible mobile platform.” While FanDuel wasn’t selected for a direct mobile license, the company announced Friday a new market access agreement with St. Louis CITY SC. “Missouri is home to some of the most passionate sports fans in the country, and we are thrilled to partner with St. Louis CITY SC to introduce our industry leading product to the Show Me State,” said Mike Raffensperger, president of Sports at FanDuel, in a news release. “We look forward to supporting the team and engaging with the community as we bring America’s #1 Sportsbook to fans across Missouri.” Circa is currently not as widely known, but it does operate online betting in several other states. Circa Sports CEO Derek Stevens said being awarded a license is a “great honor.” “We came in as the long shot against national giants like DraftKings and FanDuel, but our licensure approval today proves there’s room for a different kind of operator,” Stevens said in part. “We didn’t win by trying to be the biggest. We won by staying true to who we are, and I want to thank the Missouri Gaming Commission for recognizing that and giving us the opportunity to bring the Circa Sports experience to the State of Missouri. We can’t wait to get started!”Missouri’s sports betting measure narrowly passed in November 2024, with 50.05% of voters approving it. That measure required that sports betting would be legal starting Dec. 1, 2025.
