A Japanese Himawari-9 weather satellite took a full-earth image on Aug 11th 2025, and the Moon can be seen peeking over the Earth's limb in this closeup. Refraction by Earth's atmosphere distorts the appearance of the Moon. The second image is a wider view of the full-earth image.

    I had not thought of the atmosphere refracting light just like a glass or water but if the atmosphere slows down light, and we see magnified moonrises and sunsets then it is no wonder…

    Satellites don’t fly that high up to be able to see the curvature. It’s a composite image.
