NORWAY, Mich. (WLUC) – Kids turned back time by dancing and marching in Norway on Sunday.
The Jake Menghini Historical Museum held a week-long Early America Summer Camp. On Sunday, 16 campers set up shops to share what they learned from 1700s to 1800s colonial America.
They made crafts like candles and baskets. Campers could also choose a trade they wanted to be, from blacksmiths to pharmacists.
Camp coordinator Carol Sundstrom says getting kids out of a classroom and into the lesson really shows the kids that life wasn’t easy back then.
“It’s the best way to learn,” Sundstrom said. “They get a little bit of a lesson, and then it’s all hands-on. Do you see how difficult it would’ve been to make a basket, and there they are trying to make this basket. Oh, my goodness, everything they had, the had to make.”
Sundstrom says the camp was inspired by her studies at Williamsburg. She hopes to hold another camp in the future.
