CNN Journalist: Arkan Wanted to Take Me Hostage for Reporting on Bosnia and Kosovo

Renowned CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour has recounted a harrowing episode from the war period in the former Yugoslavia, when she was almost taken hostage by one of the war’s most notorious figures, Zeljko Ražnatović – known as Arkan.

Amanpour confessed that at the time, her critical reporting on the genocidal policies of Serbian forces during the war in Bosnia and warnings about war in Kosovo had made her a target of Arkan’s gang.

“I was reporting in very harsh tones against the Serbs about their genocidal policies during the war in Bosnia and what was inevitable in Kosovo. I almost ended up his hostage,” Amanpour said.

Arkan, one of the most feared war criminals, was responsible for numerous atrocities against civilians during the Balkan conflicts.

Amanpour added that this dangerous moment marked one of the most harrowing experiences in her career as a war correspondent.
