SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — The Shasta County Health Officer has officially declared a public health crisis due to a severe shortage of physicians.

In response, county supervisors reviewed the findings of a six-month study conducted by healthcare consultant Chriss Street. Street, who has been in discussions with UC Davis Medical School, presented his assessment to the board.

Several public speakers at the meeting emphasized the urgent need for immediate action, suggesting that increasing residency programs could quickly expand healthcare access. Street recommended forming a coalition that would include Redding City Council Member Dr. Paul Dhanuka.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the supervisors also voted 4-1 to continue collaborating with Clerk and Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis on a demonstration of his vote counting system. One proposal included using the Veterans Hall for ballot processing during the special election in November.

The board also postponed a decision on the Shasta County Sheriff’s alternative custody program, which is planned for a 90-acre parcel on Eastside Road in Anderson. The city is not yet ready to proceed with the lease agreement for the property. Discussions between the city and county are scheduled for a closed session on Tuesday evening before the regular council meeting at 6 p.m.
