Fire Services in Poland Now Rely on Neighboring Towns for Coverage

POLAND, N.Y. — Residents of Poland are currently without a local fire department following a decision made by the Poland Fire District.

The district voted to terminate services with the Poland Fire Department due to concerns over extended response times, low membership and poor membership retention.

In a statement, the fire district said the department was not providing necessary firefighter training documents and paperwork required to secure insurance.

Fire coverage for Poland will now be provided by Newport, Barneveld, Remsen and Deerfield.

Mike Foster, a Poland resident, expressed concern over the change.

“Well, it’s going to take longer for sure. I’m going to have a small fire or a big fire if they can’t get here in time, and it’s a sad situation,” Foster said.

On Wednesday, the fire district removed a fire truck from the firehouse and police were sent to the department to maintain order.

The district is expected to take possession of a second truck later tonight.

Officials from the Poland Fire Department declined to comment until they consult with their attorney.
