Scottish Tourist Faces Serious Charges After Attempting to Steal Artefacts From Pompeii
A visit to Pompeii, one of Italy’s most iconic archaeological sites, took a dramatic turn when a Scottish tourist was caught trying to steal ancient artefacts. The 51-year-old man was apprehended while attempting to leave the site with several historical objects, reportedly intended as gifts.
During an evening tour, a vigilant guide noticed the tourist picking up fragments of stone from the pavement. When he tried to exit with a backpack containing six items—including five stone fragments and a brick—authorities were immediately alerted. All stolen artefacts were recovered and returned to the archaeological park.
The tourist admitted he intended to take the items as gifts, claiming ignorance of the law prohibiting the removal of objects from the site. Italian authorities have charged him with aggravated theft, a serious offence under Italy’s cultural heritage legislation. Conviction could result in up to six years in prison and a fine of €1,500 (approximately Rs 1.5 lakh).
The swift intervention of guides, custodians, and law enforcement played a critical role in protecting Pompeii’s invaluable heritage. The tourist was apprehended near the Villa dei Misteri EAV station, and a court summons is expected.
