It takes a staff of dedicated journalists to bring you the news from around Central Indiana. In this feature, the Indianapolis Star introduces readers to our newsroom staff — or, rather, we let them introduce themselves. Up this week is Karl Schneider.
What’s your job title?
Environment reporter, thanks to the generous support of the nonprofit Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust
When did you join IndyStar?
March 2022
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I get to be in constant awe of community members who speak out for what they believe. Witnessing Hoosiers standing in front of public officials speaking passionately about a topic even as their voice shakes always invigorates my passion for this job.
Why journalism?
Your voices are important, and I want to do everything I can to make sure as many people as possible hear them. I want to peel back the layers of dense topics and shine a light there for Hoosiers while holding public and private institutions accountable.
What’s your favorite Indy area restaurant or hidden gem?
Not a restaurant, but a hidden gem in my eyes: There’s a long stretch of pawpaw somewhere along the banks of Fall Creek. There’s no better meal than one nature is gracious enough to gift. Even when the trees aren’t bearing fruit, the hike along the creek is off the beaten path and makes for a great way to soak in nature.
What do you do to unwind from a job that can be stressful?
Bang pots and pans around in my kitchen to whip up new recipes and bakes. Please send me your favorites.
What are you reading or streaming?
I’m on my nth reread of “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I’m giving the audiobook version a listen this time, which is read by the author. If I want to watch something, Taskmaster UK is always a great choice (along with the Aussie and NZ versions).
What’s your favorite quote?
“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” – Douglas Adams
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Stop listening to Douglas Adams – my editors, probably.
What’s your bucket-list vacation destination?
It would be a dream to hang out with some penguins in Patagonia.
Who would you travel back in time to meet?
Whoever was the first person to pierce a marshmallow with a stick and pop it over the campfire.
What’s your favorite comfort food?
My grandma made the best chocolate chip cookies in existence, and now my mom and aunts guard the recipe. I beg for them every chance I get.
