David Coppini was recently awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), one of the world’s top performing arts institutions. Coppini furthered his skills in acting, solo and ensemble singing, as well as in various dance genres, such as tap, ballet, jazz and contemporary. He also learnt how to play various musical instruments, including the alto saxophone and the flute.

Speaking of his experience, he said: “I shall always be immensely grateful for the opportunity to train full-time at the RCS in four artistic disciplines, and to be nurtured in an environment that encourages originality, creativity, collaboration and excellence.”

During his three years of rigorous training, Coppini engaged in many performance projects and productions with his classmates and students from other degree programmes. He was also part of the ensemble and understudy for Quasimodo in a Captivate Theatre staging of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, directed by Sally Lyall, at the Edinburgh Fringe, widely regarded as the world’s largest performing arts festival.

During the course’s final year, Coppini took part in three full-scale musicals produced and performed for public audiences. The musicals ranged from the charming and romantic, to the quirky and humorous, to the powerful and emotionally charged. This allowed Coppini to showcase his versatility and ability to interpret a variety of characters, and to convey stories in spoken word, song, music or dance in a believable and captivating manner.

He took on the role of Ladislav Sipos, while also serving as dance captain, in She Loves Me, directed by Vik Sivalingam, and of Chip Tolentino in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, directed by Tom Cooper, an actor-musician show in which he also demonstrated his talent on the flute, alto saxophone, and keyboard. The final production was Spring Awakening, directed by Louise Shepard, with Coppini cast as Otto Lammermeier and cover for Melchior Gabor, the lead male character. Each musical was directed by a guest director who gave him valuable feedback and exposure to diverse creative styles that enhanced his development.

Coppini said he believes the performing arts have the power to create beauty, foster social connection and bring about transformation through creativity and emotional expression. “I look forward to continue experiencing and sharing the joy of performing,” he said, “and to having a positive impact on individuals and communities as a performing artist.”

To support this vision, he has signed with BBA Management, an agency with long-established relationships with casting directors and producers worldwide, to facilitate his professional entry into the entertainment, theatre and film industries.

Coppini’s studies were supported by a scholarship from the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation, a Janatha Stubbs Foundation bursary, and a Malta Arts Scholarship funded by the Maltese government.
