According to official data from the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, consultations with the Polish side are currently underway regarding financing access to Starlink for Ukraine after the Polish president’s decision to veto the relevant amendments. Official information is provided through the Ministry of Digital Transformation’s press service.
“We are currently working through this issue with the Polish side in consultations”
– Representative of the Ministry of Digital Transformation
Note that on August 25, the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, announced his refusal to sign the amendment to the law on aid to Ukrainian citizens. He argued that the 800+ payment should be received only by Ukrainians who are working in Poland.
“The Law on Aid to Ukrainian Citizens does not include this amendment, around which public debate has raged. I am not changing my mind and believe that 800+ should be received only by those Ukrainians who undertake to work in Poland”
– Karol Nawrocki
The Polish government’s position and potential consequences for Starlink
Following this, Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gowkowski stated that due to the veto the country would not be able to guarantee funding for Starlink access for Ukraine. He stressed that such a decision could seriously affect Ukraine’s Internet infrastructure and the security of government data stored in protected environments.
“Karol Nawrocki’s decision to disconnect the Internet in Ukraine effectively turns into his decision on the law on aid to Ukrainian citizens. This is the end of the Starlink Internet that Poland provides to a war-torn Ukraine. It also means the end of support for storing Ukrainian government data in a secure location”
– Krzysztof Gowkowski, Deputy Prime Minister of Poland
At the same time, Gowkowski noted that preserving cyber security and maintaining stable access to critically important services should not be treated lightly – any decision must be weighed against threats and political risks to data security. He also warned against any steps that could complicate ensuring the Ukrainian forces have the necessary communications during the war.
