Repression in Serbia, a university establishes a crisis center to offer help to students

In an act of solidarity and response to the growing repression, Novi Sad’s Slobodan University has established a Crisis Center to provide urgent assistance to students and professors arrested or missing during the latest wave of police repression in Serbia.
The center was established in response to mass arrests and reported police violence, which have particularly affected academic circles and youth activists. This move marks a rare and courageous step by a higher education institution in Serbia in defense of fundamental human freedoms and the right to free thought.
The center will operate 24 hours a day, and will offer:
- Free legal assistance (pro bono) from a network of volunteer lawyers;
- Psychological support for those affected;
- Monitoring of reported cases of arrests, detentions and disappearances;
- Regular information to the public and media regarding developments.
The crisis number that has been made available is 061/1-585-232.
According to university officials, every call will be treated with urgency and complete discretion. Citizens who contact them should provide basic information about the detained person, the faculty, whether they have access to a lawyer, and whether they were raped during the arrest./The Geopost
