RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — Rutherford County Schools will all have weapons detection system in all of their elementary and high schools starting Tuesday.

They will be expanding the use of its new weapons detection system, Open Gate, to include all high school varsity football games starting next week. The system will also be in place for varsity basketball games during the upcoming winter season.

The move is part of the district’s broader effort to enhance campus security and ensure a safer environment for students, staff, and spectators. Open Gate, a walk-through detection system, is similar to those used at large-scale venues such as stadiums and arenas.

District officials are preparing for an adjustment period as students and families become accustomed to the new protocols. School administrators are advising attendees to arrive earlier than usual to accommodate the additional screening process. While the system may initially slow down entry, the district expects the process to become more efficient over time.
