Some big non-region results caused a shakeup in Week 2 of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s football media rankings as the Wednesday, Sept. 3 poll brought changes for the Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets.

Vincent got back in the rankings after a week away, taking the No. 10 spot in Class 2A, while Thompson and Spain Park each dropped in the rankings following losses in Week 2. In addition, the Chelsea Hornets received votes in the Class 6A poll.

Starting with the positives, Vincent is now No. 10 in the Class 2A rankings with 23 points in the poll, just beating out Aliceville’s 22 points to secure a spot in the top 10. Of note, three teams from Class 2A, Region 5 are in the top 10 as Tuscaloosa Academy is the new No. 1 and Sulligent is No. 9, just three points ahead of the Jackets.

Vincent returned to the rankings thanks to a 37-18 win on the road against the B.B. Comer Tigers over in Sylacauga. The win got the Jackets back to .500, and that combined with carnage across the bottom half of the poll was enough to put Vincent back in.

The Jackets will look to remain in the top 10 following their Week 3 bye. Their region slate begins on Sept. 12 with a trip to Lamar County.

There is also a new No. 1 in Class 7A as Central-Phenix City took over the top spot from Thompson. The Warriors dropped to No. 2 after their 24-23 loss to national No. 5 Grayson on the road in overtime.

However, the poll was very much split with Thompson receiving seven of the 18 first-place votes and 179 points compared to Central’s 191 points. The Red Devils are 2-0 with a 59-16 win at Pinson Valley and 38-35 win at Florida’s The First Academy in Orlando on their resume.

The Warriors battled back from three early interceptions to take the lead going into the final minutes, but a last-minute touchdown from the Rams took the game into overtime before Thompson missed a two-point conversion to win it. Each of the Warriors’ last four losses have been by one point in overtime.

Thompson will have a chance to bounce back when it hosts the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats on Sept. 5 to start region play.

Of note, Class 7A, Region 3 boasts the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 teams in the classification. No. 3 Hoover is 1-1 with a win over Spain Park and loss to IMG Academy, No. 4 Hewitt-Trussville is 2-0 with wins over JAG and Pinson Valley and No. 5 Vestavia Hills improved to 2-0 with dominant wins over South Carolina’s Westside and Auburn High School.

Spain Park fell from No. 4 to No. 6 behind Muscle Shoals and Hartselle after losing 21-10 to Hoover in Week 2. The Jags earned 86 points in the poll, four behind Hartselle for the fifth spot.

Spain Park battled a tough Hoover defense for most of the night before breaking through late for a touchdown and nearly scoring a second in the final two minutes. However, the Jags fell to the No. 3 team in Class 7A after throwing an interception to seal it.

Spain Park is off this week and can improve on its 1-1 record in a home game against the Helena Huskies on Sept. 12. The game doubles as the Jags’ region opener in Class 6A, Region 3, where they are the defending champions.

Chelsea received two points in the Class 6A rankings. The Hornets improved to 2-0 thanks to a 40-30 win at Wetumpka ahead of region play. They also boast a 51-27 win over Charles Henderson to start the season.

Chelsea will kick off region play against the Pelham Panthers at home on Sept. 5.
