  1. Given Louise Haigh lost her job as Transport Secretary for lying about a phone theft 12 years ago… This feels like it will end poorly for Rayner.

  2. Can’t survive this, will need to go from the Cabinet, just a question of when.

Labour are an absolute bin fire.

  3. She’s cooked then. Tbh I’m sure starmer has been wanting to get her out too.

This could create an opportunity to get someone more competent in a very Importsnt role. But it also.can impact strategy and reforms she was trying to implement.

  4. Is anyone out there not corrupt?

It seems an inevitability these days around positions of power whether in public or private positions.

Is it the chicken or the egg?

Were they always assholes or did opportunity make them assholes?

  5. So, she put her house into a trust to provide for her son who has life-long disabilities. She was advised at the time of the stamp duty rate to pay, and paid it. This has now turned out to be bad advice from solicitors, and therefore she will pay the extra.

I fail to see the problem here from her standpoint. She took professional advice that she paid for, followed that advice – and that advice was now wrong.

Whether or not she put the house into a trust to avoid stamp-duty is irrelevant, it was probably financial advice she received from a financial advisor, again – this wasn’t an illegal action. She may have been given wrong advice, but that is not on her. This thread will no doubt turn into a dumpster fire though given the inability it seems to talk from reason.

Explains why the torys have been going on about her tax affairs so much.

Guessing she did not keep her mouth shut about the great deal she got on her 2nd home in the commons bar or said it too loud in a nice restaurant.

  7. I was hounded relentlessly by HMRC over a £300 discrepancy on my P11D for a company I’d worked for 3 years prior. Considering we had someone resign over a mobile phone theft, not sure how she survives this.

This feels like a PR move rather than a legal one, as I’m sure some legal mind could argue it’s technically a first property and the other one is her ex-husband’s now, even if it looks bad.

But it seems like very bad PR. I assume the calculation was that this will drag on and on and it will be endless ammo for the “they aren’t like us” brigade, so better to nip it in the bud. But I can’t see that satisfying anyone.

The duke of westminster inherited 10 billion without paying a penny.

Its all one big club. You just aint a part of it

  10. Hahaha. Great to see verification of what we already knew. Starmer’s cabinet is full of careerist idiots all with no moral compass and no common sense.

  11. I swear British people have such a messed up view of Tax.

So many people have this weird stance that we should just put money in the bank and leave it. That anybody who seeks any way to get the most of out their what they are earning are greedy.

If somebody seeks the advice from a professional financial expert on how to maximise their earning potential, how to get the most out of the money that they have earned what is wrong with that?

Now if that person does this but the advice they were given was wrong or worse, criminally negligent, people blame them, saying it was there fault and they should of just been happy with what they had..

How dare they maximise their earning..

I’m not a particular fan of Angela Rayner but she has done nothing wrong.

She sought the advice of a professional financial expert, followed the advice she was given, it transpired it was wrong and now she will pay what is owning.

  12. Rayner has quite possibly been more of a disappointment than Starmer and that is saying something.

  13. Parachuted into a super safe Labour seat (Ashton-U-Lyne), enriched herself, took advantage of right to buy, then bought another property outside Tameside. Claimed it was her first house (nice way to repesent Tameside Angela, which is one the most deprived areas in the UK in terms of education, health, social mobility…40 odd years of a Labour council), so as to avoid tax.
In Tameside hundreds of acres of countryside are being destroyed to build more housing, while Angela buys more property.

Do as I say, not as I do (which incidently is the title of an upcoming tune by Ded Ferrets…one of the last of the working class bands from Tameside)

  14. Clearly the solution here should be to ban MPs from owning more than two houses.

All in favour? I’m sure the Tory MPs will agree!

    Lmao. “We’re not like them”

Admittedly, the Tories were fucking awful. DePfeffel partied while I was looking after someone vulnerable, bound to all those lovely rules he didn’t bother following. Plus, you know, Truss.

It’d be nice to see integrity AND competence balanced in a politician- just occasionally

  16. She has to resign. This isn’t an oversight, or something that she forgot to do, or a box an aide forgot to tick.

This is a **Labour** Deputy Prime Minister sitting down with her accountant and asking them to make sure she pays as little tax as possible.

Wait, Reddit told me this was all made up by the media and something something Tories and telegraph.

  18. OriginUnknown82 on

Ah so the previous comments about dodging tax isn’t because shes an ‘articulate working-class woman’ (Labour MP Steve Reed) – its because shes dodged tax. Also Didnt Kier say that hes “proud of her” over this incident?

  19. So all she’s done wrong here is take tax advice from someone who didn’t know the system. She took actions to try and ensure she was doing the right thing and did what she was told to do…

Not a tax dodge by any means .. and certainly not a reason to sack her.

  20. Funny, the other day here everyone was insisting she’d done nothing wrong and it was just a witch hunt by the Tories and right wing press. I wonder if those people have learned anything. Probably not.
