Two Maltese people have died after being involved in a head-on collision with a truck in Sicily.

The accident involved a Toyota Yaris which had a Maltese registration number plate and a truck at 3pm on the Catania-Ragusa motorway close to the town of Lentini.

Radio Una Voce Vicini said that the Maltese people were extracted from the car but were both pronounced dead on site.

The victims were later named as Manuel Buhagiar, aged 73, and his wife Doris Buhagiar, aged 69, who were both from Żebbuġ.

Buhagiar was a police officer, having had badge number PC 574, and the Malta Police Union led the tributes and condolences for his death.

“Firefighters extracted the two bodies from the wreckage, but doctors pronounced them dead. Carabinieri officers have carried out a detailed reconstruction of the accident involving the two vehicles,” the report in Italian press read.

The highway meanwhile was closed in both directions for several hours, while the two vehicles in the accident were seized by orders of the Siracusa Public Prosecutor’s Office’s duty magistrate.

The bodies were transferred to the Lentini Hospital morgue.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry said that it is in close contact with the family of the victims through its Consular Services and the Embassy of Malta in Rome, offering all support possible.
