Midfielder Marko Stamenić has been forced to withdraw from the New Zealand squad for the two-match Soccer Ashes series against Australia.

Stamenić has left the All Whites camp in Canberra to return to his Swansea City club in Wales after experiencing tightness in his adductor muscles during training.

The problem followed Swansea’s win against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend but he was cleared to join the All Whites for the international window.

Australia have made a change to their original squad, with newcomer Jack Iredale (29) replacing Fran Karacic who was injured in his last club game for Croatia’s Hajduk Split.

Iredale, who plays for Scottish club Hibernian, was eligible to play for New Zealand, where he lived from the age of one before moving to Australia at 10. His mother, Fiona, represented New Zealand in judo at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

About the Soccer Ashes

The trophy was created in 1923, containing ashes of cigars smoked by Australian captain Alex Gibb and New Zealand captain George Campbell following the first meeting between the two nations in Australia in June 1923.

The trophy went missing in 1954 but was rediscovered during the COVID pandemic and returned to Football Australia.
