Calendar. On September 8, 1944, as part of the “Burza” campaign, in the area of the red swamp in the area of today’s Biebrza National Park there was the largest partisan battle in the Bialystok region. 9. Regiment of the Home Army Horse Riflemen, commanded by Captain Wiktor Konopka pseud. “Grom”, he stood up to the overwhelming German forces. About 110 partisans fell in the clash, including the commander himself, while German losses are estimated at about 1,500 soldiers. The genesis of this event dates back to the years of 1944, when the 9th Horse Rifle Regiment, in the peak of about 400 well -armed and trained soldiers, concentrated in the region of Osowy Grzed and the Red Bagna. The unit, taking advantage of the knowledge of the area, decided to boldly hit. The partisans used the morning fog to move between German lines and attack the enemy in a surprising way. The battle took place in three phases, each of them was a show of determination and a great organization. Despite the huge numerical advantage and the fire of the occupier’s fire, soldiers of the Home Army managed to inflict heavy losses to the opponent, which permanently entered the history of guerrilla fights in Podlasie. However, the victory was paid for with the highest price. Along with the commander of “Grom”, more than a hundred of his soldiers were killed, and the death of the charismatic captain led to the weakening of the unit and partial dispersion. Some partisans were later incorporated into the Polish People’s Army, others continued to fight, becoming part of the tragic fate of the cursed soldiers after the war. The battle on the red swamp remains a symbol of courage and dedication to this day. She proved that even in the face of almost ten times the enemy’s advantage, it was possible to take a blow, which was widely heard among the German occupation forces. It was also a fight on the border of human possibilities – with determination, courage and excellent use of difficult terrain conditions. #Czerwonebagno #AkcjaBurza #armiakrajowa #bitwapartyzancka #9Pułkstrzelcjencjennych #wiktorkonopko #grom #barostocczyzna #Biebrzański -Aparta
