The Iris Nebula is a reflection nebula bluish in color. It’s surrounded by dark nebulae, dust filled regions of space that block our view from the starlight beyond. It’s roughly 1300ly away from Earth.
It is blue because starlight hits fine dust particles which create Rayleigh Scattering which causes blue wavelengths to scatter more and is also why our sky is blue.
No idea what all those numbers mean, but this is one of the coolest things I have seen all year. I simply cannot believe that (with the right “eye”) one can see this from one’s back year. Thanks for sharing.
