Two tourists caught having drunken sex outside the Valletta police station have been fined €200 and given a conditional discharge.
The two, who are British and American and both aged 31, appeared before magistrate Victor Axiak on Wednesday afternoon.
Police inspector Jeffrey Rizzo explained that police officers were walking into the Valletta police station when they noticed the two having sex on a ramp leading to it.
The pair ran off but were caught. The incident happened at around 2:30am on Wednesday.
In court, they both pleaded guilty to committing offences against decency or morals in a public place, being naked in public and being drunk in public.
The prosecution requested that the pair are fined while the defence noted that there was already an element of embarrassment in the whole incident. The pair also apologised for their behaviour in court.
“While such acts are prohibited and should be repressed, this was done in the darkness and with the accused avoiding people,” defence lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar said.
The pair were found guilty of the charges, and they were fined €200 each. The court also imposed a one-year conditional discharge.
Magistrate Victor Axiak presided over the case.
Police Inspector Jeffrey Rizzo prosecuted.
Lawyers Mark Mifsud Cutajar and Katrina Borg Ferrando appeared for the accused.
