Norway’s rehabilitation-oriented Penal system is presented as civil and humane, but it just feels unfair. Why does the Norwegian government care about the human rights of a Neo-Nazi Terrorist who disregards the human rights of dozens of innocent people? This is not Civilization, it is Pacifism at the level of stupidity. Please someone explain this to me.

Yes, but at least he doesn’t have the luxury of travelling and new experiences that sane people would be able to enjoy

  2. Because it is moore punishment to live the rest of your life with out your freedom. Yes, BReivik has ha very good cell and being taken good care of, but he don’t have freedom he can’t do what he want, when he wants it and he probably have to live his life like that for the rest of his life. That’s moore punishment then death if you ask me. And I like it.

  3. Justice and revenge are two very different things. The man will be imprisoned probably for life, and he’s in isolation to boot which, frankly, is pretty inhumane considering how important human contact is. So I’d say he’s being punished plenty. Killing him would be letting him off easy.

  4. We’ve been through this a hundred times. Norway has good standards for prisons, which is working as intended. Low recidivism rates etc.

We care about human rights, and that has to mean to everyone. If you don’t do that, you can’t say that you care about them at all. That is actually the whole point of them. We are better than that.

And btw: he does not live luxuriously, and he will never get out.

He’s still imprisoned, isn’t he? Parole was denied last year. Or have there been new developments I’m not aware of?

Do we prefer american prisons? Hell no

Prison is there to keep him out of society. And since we have a policy of reintergration and technically a max sentence of 21 years. The system is built make criminals hopefully into decent civilians again.

This guy however will never be free again. Just get 21 more years again and again and again.

Its important to remember norwegain prison system is built for 99% of cases, which used to be a place for drunk people sitting inside for acouple of days making wooden pallets after a fight. Harden criminals and murderes were so rare that they were just isolated in a locked off area or room. We didnt have the problems we have today even 20 years ago. And certainly not in 80s or back to the 60s. therefore we dont really have a dedicated system for serial criminals who will stay dangerous for the rest of their lifes. And we certainly dont have the capability to judge with 100% certainty on all cases either. Just look at how many wrongful convictions theres been in usa. And how many of them was executed for no reason? This cant be tolerated here.
