  1. Never ever engage with the government on TV licences and you’ll never be in trouble, the whole arrangement relies on you admitting a “crime” and then they fast track convict you, never talk to them and they’ll never touch you.

And this isn’t me telling you to deliberately avoid paying, this is just the fact of the matter with how the arrangement works.

For them to get you otherwise, they’d have to enter your house, access your signal recieving and decoding devices (which thanks to the internet could be anything from a phone to a server stack in your garage), determine you’ve been watching the football, determine that the stream was “live” and not played back from tape, and then reliably present this as evidence.

  2. Just don’t ever interact with the inspector and you will never need to pay. Not a word, the second they say ‘TV licensing’ close the door. If you do that there is absolutely nothing they can do to prove you were watching TV. They need to prove you were watching live TV beyond reasonable doubt which is incredibly incredibly hard – they rely entirely on confessions to catch you. Unsurprisingly the vast majority of prosecutions are either young women e.g. uni students or the elderly, who are more easily intimidated and likely to confess – they catch very few men especially younger men as they are far more likely to tell them to do one

  3. I simply don’t understand why tv licensing regimes even need to exist at all. No such foppery exists in Canada for instance.

Anyways, I will never pay for any tv licensing for any device I own. Full stop.

  4. How utterly dumb do you have to be to get done for not having a TV licence. It’s like you have to voluntarily offer evidence against yourself.

  5. SerendipitousCrow on

My housemate as a student let one in once and he said the guy was trying to twist his words constantly to get an admission out of him.

At the time our TV had no aerial and was mostly used for playing mario kart and watching YouTube via laptop and hdmi

The only way to “win” is not to let them in
